Kateel Durgaparameshwari Temple: History, Legend & Visitor Guide
Perched on an island in the middle of the sacred Nandini River, the Kateel Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple is one of the most venerated pilgrimage sites in Coastal Karnataka. Located about 29 km from Mangaluru, this temple isn't just a place of worship it's a serene, spiritual haven where nature and devotion blend seamlessly. The Sacred Legend of River Nandini The story of Kateel is deeply tied to River Nandini. According to local lore, when the region suffered a severe drought, the celestial sage Jabali performed a penance to appease the gods. To help the people, he sought the river goddess Nandini (daughter of Kamadhenu) to flow on Earth. However, Nandini initially refused and was cursed to flow as a terrestrial river. Realizing her mistake, she sought a way out. The Divine Mother Durgaparameshwari assured her that she would take birth as her daughter on Earth, defeating the demon Arunasura and liberating Nandini. The name *Kateel* itself is derived from two Tulu words: *Kati* (center) and *Ela* (land)—referring to the temple's unique location right in the center of the river. What Makes the Visit Special* The Island Setting:Crossing the bridge over the gently flowing river to enter the sanctum sets a tranquil mood immediately.
